Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Development

At Hart Primary School we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive, caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of the cultures.
All members of the school community are encouraged to develop into responsible citizens through the implementation of modern British Values. Modern British Values are shared through the thoughtful and wide-ranging promotion of the children’s SMSC development, enabling them to thrive in a supportive, highly cohesive learning community.

Spiritual Development
As a school we have come to a consensus that there is no single definition of spirituality as we recognise that it can mean different, but equally meaningful, things to different people at different times. Indeed, a single person’s view of spirituality can change throughout their life. We aim to give children a range of experiences to develop their own spirituality and refine what it means for them. These include:

  • Learning about different religions, races and cultures.
  • PSHE Units
  • Daily collective worship:
    • Roots and Shoots Worship based on Christian values of: Compassion, Courage, Forgiveness, Friendship, Generosity, Justice, Perseverance, Respect, Service, Thankfulness. Trust, Truthfulness. Hope, Community, Dignity, Wisdom, Joy and Peace.
    • A Community Meeting where children meet in their house teams and discuss stories around the themes of British Values and Protected Characteristics.
    • Worship led by Revd. Janet linked to the Liturgical Calendar
    • Singing Assembly
    • Proud – Celebration Assembly
  • Developing children’s self-esteem through praise, feedback, rewards.
  • Developing children’s ability to think critically and independently.
  • Encourage children to express their individual identity.
  • Experiencing moments of stillness and reflection.
  • Allow children to discuss their beliefs, feelings, values and responses to personal experiences.

Moral Development

At Hart Primary School, moral development can be seen in:

  • Our PSHE and RHE curriculums.
  • Our school rules of Ready, Respectful and Safe.
  • Our tracking and rewards systems.
  • Encouraging children to see the difference between right and wrong – restorative conversations.
  • Promoting and demonstrating justice, fairness, honesty and respect for everyone.
  • Visits from outside agencies, e.g. Police, Fire Brigade, Local Councillors etc
  • Showing respect for the environment – Eco Club
  • Develop a sense of moral issues – Newsround

Social Development

At Hart Primary School, social development can be seen in:

  • Promoting and encouraging positive relationships through all aspects of school life.
  • The introduction of strategies for a connected classroom.

Cultural Development

At Hart Primary School, we aim to promote cultural development through:

  • Recognising the value and richness of cultural diversity in Britain, and how these influenced individuals and society – Understanding of the world, history, geography, science, art curriculums
  • Recognise different religions around the world and their cultural implications
  • Develop an understanding of their social and cultural environment – local history studies – Ralph Ward Jackson, Island of the Stag and Hart Village in WWII
  • Be aware of, and celebrate cultural diversity – Visits to the local mosque and Hart Church, fundraising/charity for the Salaam Centre, African Drumming Sessions etc
  • Stories from other cultures in Community Meetings – Links to British Values & Protected Characteristics.
  • Promoting an appreciation of the arts – Art gallery visits, visits to theatre and orchestra, maximising opportunities for children to experience live music.
