Years 5 & 6
“For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
Welcome to the Year 5/6 class page!
This year we will cover a range of topics from programming Micro Bits, learning about World War 2, to understanding the circulatory system to how we create healthy recipes from a range of countries. There are so many more to list! Please see our knowledge organisers if you would like to know more.
Homework
Homework will be set on Teams every Monday and will need to be completed by the following Monday.
Spellings will be sent out at the start of the half term and will provide an overview of what will be covered in each week. Spellings will be tested on a Monday. When practising spellings at home, we recommend using the ‘look, cover, write, check’ method.
By the end of the year, Year 5 are expected to read and spell 50% of the Y5/6 common exception words Year 6 are expected to read and spell 100%.
Reading expectations
Research shows that children who read regularly (for at least 30 minutes every day) have an expansive vocabulary, notice grammar rules and have improved critical thinking skills. Reading provides insights into new ideas and points of view. If a child has read for 15 minutes at school, we recommend they read independently or with an adult for at least 15 minutes at home.
Optional topic grids
In addition to our weekly English or maths Teams homework, there will be an optional topic grid that is posted onto our Y5/6 Teams page. This will include links to our current topics should children wish to extend their learning further. Children can share and post their work onto the Teams page if they would like to.
